Kwara evacuates another 54 beggars.

…charges public to work with government to get rid of miscreants

As part of its ongoing efforts to address public concern and ensure safety in the public spaces, the Kwara State government has evacuated another set of beggars from some major streets of Ilorin, the state capital.

In the operation that lasted till about 8:00pm on Friday, and led by the state Commissioner for Social Development, Hajia Mariam Nnafatima Imam PhD, about 54 beggars including men and women were evacuated for rehabilitation.

The commissioner said the operation, was carried out to ensure public safety, a cleaner environment in the state and to rid the streets of miscreants and every individual that constitutes nuisance in the metropolis.

She vowed that the operation would be taken beyond Ilorin metropolis to achieve greater impacts in the state.

Hajia Imam charged members of the public to cooperate with the government to remove beggars from the city, describing their activities as capable of causing not only health challenges among the people but also organised crimes in the metropolis.

Some people who interacted with the commissioner during the operation complained about harassment by some street beggars which, they explained, had spurred security concerns among the people.

They also expressed dissatisfaction about lack of sanitary regulation in those beggars-infested streets, describing it as an health hazard to the residents.

The evacuated beggars were later profiled and handed over to the appropriate authority for further action.
