In a conscious effort to get the state rid of social vices like street begging, street hawking, child labour and abuse, the Kwara State Ministry of Social Development has moved to collaborate with the Ministry of Justice to use legal means in forestalling social vices in the State.
The Commissioner for Social Development, Hon. Mariam Nnafatima Imam, PhD, made this known during her official visitation to the Chief Judge of Kwara State, Hon. Justice Abiodun Ayodele Adebara at his office, at the State Hight Court, Ilorin.
Hon. Mariam said the Ministry of Social Development is commited to ensuring upliftment of less privileged and erradication of social vices to make the State safe for all residents.
She stated that concerted efforts are beign made on regular basis to nip the issues of street begging, hawking and other social vices in the bud noting that little has been achieved because the offenders keeps coming back.
Hon. Mariam noted that the best approach to forestalling the street begging menace is through legal means where offenders are charged to court for prosecution and sentenced or heavily fined without delay to serve as deterent to others making partnership with the Ministry of Justice a necessity.
She reaffirmed that the State Governor, His Excellency, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s continous support to ensure safety and well-being of all kwarans, especially children, vulnerable groups and other disadvantaged members of the State.
She also intimated the Chief Judge on the need to properly engage the traditional rulers in the State to tackle some of the social vices through the traditional institutions.
In his remark, the Chief Judge of Kwara State, Hon. Justice Abiodun Ayodele Adebara commended Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq CON exemplary leadership and unrelenting efforts to ensure social equity and Justice in the State.
He also appreciated Hon. Mariam Nnafatima Imam, PhD, for her proactiveness and foresight in ensuring Ministry of Social Development taking the lead in ensuring social responsibility and uplifting the disadvantaged members of the State.
Justice Adebara further stated that the State judiciary will collaborate with the Ministry of Social Development on strategic action plans and implementation of policies and programs to erradicate street begging, hawking and other social vices in the State.
